Is There a Way to Make Botox Results Last Longer?

Is There a Way to Make Botox Results Last Longer?

Botox injections are one of the most requested cosmetic treatments on the planet and with good reason. The many benefits of using a neuromodulator to smooth lines and wrinkles, as well as other cosmetic enhancements, are well known. However, one of the drawbacks of Botox for many users is how quickly the effects dissipate. One of the questions we are asked by our patients at Arcadia Wellness Center in Phoenix is if there is a way to make Botox results last longer. Here is our advice on the best way to utilize Botox treatments.

How Botox Works

Before we discuss the longevity of Botox and the best ways to get the most from your treatments, let’s talk about how it works. Botox is a neuromodulator, which means that it inhibits the transmission of nerve signals. The neurotoxin used in Botox – botulinum toxin A – interferes with the nerve signals to targeted muscles. Once injected, the muscle is in a state of paralysis, which can stop the normal contractions that occur.

The neuromodulator traits of Botox are what make it useful for cosmetic treatments. The dynamic lines that appear on the face like 11s, worry lines and crow’s feet can be reduced when the muscles that cause them are relaxed. Precision injections can target the specific muscles that cause lines, while still allowing normal facial movement. The relaxation of the injected muscle can also shrink certain muscles like the jaw (masseter muscle) or smooth neck cords that are pronounced.

The effects of Botox are not immediate. It can take anywhere from two to several days for the effects to begin. Certain treatments like masseter reduction may take several weeks or months to appear. Eventually, the neurotoxin becomes less effective, and the nerve signals and muscles return to normal function, usually in about 3-4 months. If the treatment is not repeated, patients can begin to see their old lines and wrinkles return.

What Affects the Longevity of Neuromodulators?

All neuromodulators using botulinum toxin A have temporary results. The effect of blocking nerve signals to the muscles will weaken over time, but the results can vary depending on many different factors. Why can one person receive Botox treatment and need another series of injections in three months while another may only need two treatments in a year? There are a few different factors that contribute to the longevity of any neuromodulator.

Tips for Extending the Effects of Botox

While many people love the benefits they receive from their Botox injections, everyone agrees they’d enjoy fewer treatments. While the procedure is fast, usually only taking less than 20 minutes, it does require a trip to our clinic and purchase of the treatment. To extend the results of Botox and require fewer treatments, there are a few things you can do.

Take Care of Your Skin and Health

Skin that receives the nutrients and care it needs will age slower and stay firmer longer. Wearing sunscreen to protect your skin from UV rays can reduce sun damage and breakdown of the skin. The healthier your skin, the better it will respond to Botox, helping the effects last longer. Make sure to stay hydrated – moisture is vital for skin firmness and elasticity – and eat healthy to give your skin the nutrients it needs.

Take Zinc Supplements

Some studies have shown taking extra zinc may help you retain the effects of neuromodulators. One study published in Medical News Today’s website (medicalnewstoday.com) showed 93% of patients showed improvement of their botulinum A toxin injection effects when taking zinc supplements, including longer results. You can take a zinc supplement for a few days before your treatment – it is inexpensive and safe, as it is a natural mineral that is in the food you eat every day.

Minimize Skin Treatments for One Week

Certain facial masks, exfoliants and toners can reduce the effects of Botox if used right after injections. Avoid intense scrubs or skin treatments for at least a week after your treatment. Ask your injector about any products you should avoid for the best results.

Avoid Sun Exposure

For at least 24 hours after treatment with a neuromodulator, avoid direct sun exposure. This can dilate blood vessels and allow faster dispersion of the neurotoxin. As a general rule, wear sunscreen whenever outside to minimize the effects of UV ray damage on your skin.

Keep Up with Your Botox Treatments

When you first start using Botox, you may need treatments more often if you already have significant furrows or lines. After time, the muscles that cause these lines weaken and may require less frequent treatments. For younger patients, starting Botox at the first sign of lines can work as a preventive measure and treatments may not be needed as often.

Choose an Experienced Injector

You will find many places to get Botox but not all of them are reputable or experienced injectors. Choose a medical professional that has years of experience and an excellent reputation. Our injectors at Arcadia Wellness Center are some of the best injectors in Phoenix, so you can trust that your treatment will be done safely and effectively. An experienced injector can use the right dosage and placement for maximum results.

Avoid Rubbing or Massaging the Treatment Area

You do not want to move the neurotoxin that was just injected into your skin. Rubbing or massaging the treatment area can spread the botulinum toxin A to other areas where you do not want it to go. Not only can this dissipate the results in the area desired, but you may have unwanted results in other muscles. Avoid rubbing the area for a few days after your treatment.

In ideal conditions, Botox treatments can last up to six months for dynamic lines. Treatments for master or neck cord reduction tend to require a series of treatments but may not need as frequent treatments after the desired result is achieved. It is important to remember that everyone is affected differently but following the mentioned tips can impact the effectiveness and longevity of your treatment.
